Iphone 4 vs Xperia Play

Today, we thought we would take a look at the two phones that were recently released by telecom majors Sony Ericsson and Apple. Both the phones have certain pros and cons of their own. This review will be comprehensive and will cover all important parameters of comparison. It goes without saying that we are huge fans of Apple but we have tried to stay unbiased all throughout. Read on!

Ergonomics:

The design features of Apple are awesome and that is needless to say. We were quite surprised when even the XPERIA Play stood a chance in competing against the iPhone 4. Measuring 119 x 62 x 16 mm lengthwise, breadthwise and in depth, the Play is not far from the beauty of the iPhone that tips the scales at 115.2 mm in length, 58.6 mm in breadth and 9.3 mm in thickness. The Play weighs about 175g, which is pretty bulky and heavy compared to the 137g of the iPhone 4. 4.0” and 3.5” LED-backlit LCD capacitive touchscreens can be found on the Play and the iPhone respectively.

Operating System:

While the Play operates on the famous Android platform, Apple’s iPhone chooses to run on the hallmark operating system of Apple, Inc. which is the iOS and it sports the latest version of the iOS, the iOS 4. The Play ships an Android v2.3 (Gingerbread OS). The iPhone has a 1GHz ARM Cortex A8 processor with a PowerVR GPU while the Play, on the other hand, has a similar processor but with the Scorpion brand and an Adreno 205 GPU. While the phones have extremely fast processors, it is to be noted that the market will soon be taken over by dual core CPUs.

Connectivity:

It goes without saying that Apple’s device has excellent communication features and so does Sony Ericsson. This fact has been yet again exemplified in the iPhone and the XPERIA Play. Both the phones have GSM quad-bands of 850/900/1800/1900 that supports 2G communication flawlessly and HSDPA 850/90081900/2100 for 3G that offers seamless internet connection, video-calling, impeccable download speeds, etc. Apart from these, Wi-Fi, GPRS and EDGE have been enabled on both the phones for alternate uses for internet connectivity. Bluetooth and microUSB are also present for file transfer to other phones and computers or laptops..

Memory:

Though the Ericsson has only a 400MB internal storage and a 512MB RAM, the phone sports a sleek 32GB expandable memory for data storage through a microSD card slot. On the other hand, the Apple has an amazing internal memory slot of 16/32GB supplemented by a 512MB RAM but it has no memory card slots. The negatives on the phones cancel out each other. We wish Apple incorporates memory card slots on its phones rather than relying on the internal memory alone. If not for extra space, it will definitely come in handy for backup services in the rare and unfortunate event that the phone crashes.

Camera:

The Play has an amazing 5MP shooter that shoots excellent pics with amazing clarity and shoots videos at WVGA quality without a glitch. It is also fitted with add-on features such as autofocus, geo-tagging, etc. The iPhone has an equally powerful 5MP camera which also shoots pretty good pics and which is also fitted with the aforesaid add-ons. Just like the Play, the iPhone’s cam also records video at but with a quality of 720p at 30fps. The iPhone and the Play, both have secondary cameras.

Battery Life:

The iPhone has a standard Li-Po battery with a power rating of 1420 mAh while the Play has a more powerful battery of 1500 mAh rating. But Apple’s internal technology is best suited for maximization of battery resource and thus we should not have any problems there.
